I may have bought my bike from the triads today...

Finally got myself a bike today, and it was about as sketchy as picking up a shoulder-fired missle. Talked to all these people who told me there is a place where they sell "used" bikes for ridiculously cheap prices, so I made my way over to that part of town. I saw all kinds of stolen shit but couldnt find any bikes for a long time. So I get to asking a few guys hanging out in the area and I'm told that to get the really cheap bikes you gotta talk to the guy who sells the locks. Ironic.

So that guy directs me to another guy who is like the biggest gangster type dude. He was so fucking paranoid, constantly looking around, pretending we weren't together and then had me wait about 30 minutes. Finally he told me to follow him but he began walking super fast. He just didnt want to be seen with me, so I followed him from a safe distance--about 50 feet--deep into some very sketchy alleys where I was told to wait few more minutes. Then follow him into an even sketchier alley. Then wait another minute. Finally we get taken inside some strange shanty and there are two bad-ass bikes for me to choose. And they only cost $30. The best part was the bike had pegs, so my friend could ride with my all the way home:)

As I think back on it though, the fact that it took so long to get the bike makes me think they might have just gone and stolen it as soon as I told them I was looking for one. That would suck, but I try to look on the bright side of things. Sweet new bike!! If anybody comes to visit, we can go get you one too and ride all over the city.

Bo Ai Children's Center

Picture's from Bo Ai Children's Center, Shanghai's first non-governmental center for kid's with cerebral palsy. The last picture is the founder, Gao Yali, a friend of mine who allowed me to stay in her house for my first six months in China. To share my gratitude, last year I created a Web site for their organization, BoAiKids.com.
